Magnus Carlsen has a new challenger: Sergei Karjakin has triumphed in the finals of the candidates tournament, now he must compete against the world champion in November.
the Russian Sergei Karjakin won the candidates tournament in Moscow. He is the Challenger of World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen at the world title fight in November. Karjakin defeated in the final the American Fabiano Caruana.
The decision on the tournament in Moscow fell on the last lap in a direct duel between Karjakin and Caruana. Both were fed with the same score in the final. Karjakin scored a total of 8.5 points from 14 games and drew Caruana and former world champion Viswanathan Anand from India that brought each 7.5 points on the next places.
Karjakin the tournament had led a long time but was in round eleven of Anand stopped. By beating the Bulgarians Vesselin Topalov he could sit back on top and benefited from a defeat Anand against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). Only Caruana had him with victory still can make the success of dispute at the end.
It is the biggest success of the 26-year-old Karjakin, who comes from Ukraine and plays for Russia since of 2009. Already with 12 years he had attained the rank of Grand Master, that he holds the record as the youngest chess grandmaster ever. In 2012 he won the world championship in rapid chess. To participate in the Candidates tournament Karjakin qualified through his finals at the Chess World Cup. This game, he won.
