Michael Garcia: resignation as chief investigator
Micha el Garcia announced his resignation as Fifa chief investigator. Thus, the Americans withdrew on Wednesday from the consequences of the controversial decision of the FIFA World Association in corruption scandal surrounding the World Cup awarded to Russia and Qatar. On Tuesday, the Fifa Garcias had rejected an objection to the report of the German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert on the controversial awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Championships.
Garcia complained in his written opinion a “lack of leadership” within the Fifa, which can be understood as a criticism of FIFA President Blatter. In addition, he had lost confidence in the independence of Eckert. “By decision of 13 November 2014 Eckert my confidence has been lost in the independence of the Judicial Chamber”, said the former US Attorney. He had come to the conclusion that his role was over in the process. Garcia was responsible within the FIFA Ethics Committee investigation, Eckert to chair the adjudicatory chamber.
Garcia was possible cases of corruption around the World Cup Award 2018 and 2022 examined together in a 430-page report and forwarded to Eckert. The Munich judges looked after an initial review of the documents but “no serious violations” in the bidding process for the World Cup tournaments.
