Coca-Cola and McDonald’s have prompted the first sponsors of the football world governing body FIFA Joseph Blatter to withdraw immediately. “With every day that passes, the image and the reputation of FIFA will continue tainted”, it said the beverage company Coca-Cola. “We believe that it would be in the interest of the game when FIFA president Sepp Blatter would resign immediately, so that the reform process with the credibility can be done that is needed,” the group wrote McDonald’s. Against the 79-year-old Blatter a criminal case was opened in Switzerland.
The unmistakable calls came four days after Blatter had however made it clear to his official residence in Zurich, not to cede before the elections on 26 February. He had stressed on Monday in a speech to the FIFA staff to have done nothing illegal.
In a statement from his lawyers stated that Blatter respectfully disagree with the position of Coca-Cola. If he was going to leave his office, that would not not even advance the reform process to best benefit of FIFA and it would, he believed. The consequence: He will not resign.
A week ago the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office had reported that against Blatter “a criminal case on suspicion of breach of trust and – eventualiter – opened for misappropriation” was. FIFA suffers the worst corruption scandal in its history for months.
