Basketball: Christian Welp dies at age 51 – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Hamburg – With horror and sadness the German Basketball has responded to the sudden death of former national player and NBA pros Chris Welp. “We are shocked and deeply saddened,” said Wolfgang Brenscheidt, managing director of the German Basketball Federation. “We lose an outstanding national player, a great companion and a good friend.”

Welp was believed to have died of heart failure at the age of 51 years. In the only previous European title winning the German national team in 1993, he was honored as the most valuable player of the tournament. At 71:70 in the final against Russia, the 2.12-meter center came to a total of 18 points, scored just before the end by dunking the compensation and sank the ensuing free throw to win.

“I am personally very, very sad today,” said the former coach and current European champion Bayern coach Svetislav Pesic. “He was a young man when life begins.” Jan Jagla, current national team, announced: “A phenomenal player, a great coach and much better person is gone too soon.”

His longtime companion Dirk Bauer man responded “deeply shocked” at the death Welps. “It’s a very, very sad news,” said the former national coach. “Even if it sounds like a cliché: Christian was a really good one.”

As an assistant coach Welp have among other things an “important role” played in silver prize at the 2005 European Championships, recalled longtime coach of the German national team. Peasant Welp had also trained at Bayer Leverkusen.
