FIFA functionary Figueredo in Uruguay in custody – THE WORLD

Montevideo – the detainee in FIFA corruption scandal, former President of the South American Football Association COMNEBOL, Eugenio Figueredo, has been detained in Uruguay

After his extradition from Switzerland a judge ruled that he was admitted, among other things because of corruption and money laundering in the central prison of the capital Montevideo, as prosecutor Juan Gómez told. Figueredo had accepted that, “he got large sums of money,” Gómez said. This he then invested elsewhere.

The 83-year-old had arrived Christmas Eve in Montevideo. Because of allegations of corruption, the US had also requested his extradition, whereas the former FIFA vice-president submitted complaint. Because it is determined in Uruguay against Figueredo for more crimes than in the US, decided the Swiss authorities to transfer him to his homeland. His lawyer Karen Pintos called to ask him because of his age and a critical state of health under house arrest, which the judicial authorities but rejected.

Figueredo was the end of May with six other top officials of FIFA, including Vice President Jeffrey Webb and ex-Vice Jack Warner, have been arrested in Switzerland. He was sitting in Zurich since then in detention.
