Australian Open: Sabine Lisicki fails, Laura Siegemund wins – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Laura Siegemund has made the Australian Open for a big surprise. The 27-year-old tennis player won in Melbourne against Serbian Jelena Jankovic 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 4, and therefore stands as a second German tennis player in round three. Siegemund made their success against the former world number one after 2:29 hours perfectly. Before her Anna-Lena Friedsam had survived the second round on Wednesday already.

“The victory means the world to me,” Siegemund said after the biggest success of her career. “It was amazing to play in front of this audience. There has been so much fun.” Previously, the number 97 in the world had ever been only twice in a Grand Slam tournament in the peloton. In the next round she will now meet either on Annika Beck or Timea Bacsinszky from Switzerland.

For Sabine Lisicki, the tournament is over. The 26-year-old lost to Denisa Allertová from the Czech Republic 3: 6, 6: 2, 4: 6 and has thus failed in its third consecutive year round three of the Australian Open. Lisicki was clearly noted her fitness residue after their long hiatus due to a knee injury. “I just do not have yet the match practice and the blows from the training,” Lisicki said. “But that’s only to be expected after only five weeks of training.”

In Angelique Kerber, Julia Goerges, Annika Beck and Tatjana Maria on Thursday four more German players have a chance in the third round collect. In the men, however, all German representatives have resigned.
