Javier Mascherano convicted of tax evasion – SPIEGEL ONLINE

The Argentine national soccer player Javier Mascherano of FC Barcelona has been sentenced to a prison sentence of one year and a fine of 815,000 euros for tax evasion. With the decision by a court in Barcelona accepted a convention to which the lawyers of the defender had agreed with the prosecution and the tax office.

In prison does not have Mascherano but: prison sentences of less than two years in Spain usually commuted to probation as long as no criminal convictions. The lawyers of the defensive specialists presented the request to replace the sentence by a fine of 21,600 euros. This would mean that they disappear from the criminal record. The court postponed the decision.

Mascherano had admitted in court to have evaded in the years 2011 and 2012, around 1.5 million euros in taxes. He paid the sum in September 2015 the interest due after.

The 31-year-old is in Barcelona since 2010 under contract. With the Catalans he twice won the Champions League, among other things. At the World Cup in 2014 he came to Argentina in all games over the full distance for use – even in the final defeat by Germany
