Twelfth success for Stephane Peterhansel: The French Peugeot driver has his lead in the last stage of the 38th Dakar Rally defends sovereign and secured the overall victory. The record champion has now won six times per rally by car and motorbike. Peterhansel was on of the 180-kilometer 13th and final stage of Villa Carlos Paz to Rosario in Argentina, although almost six minutes slower than last year’s winner and followers Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar (Mini). His margin of over 40 minutes, with whom he had gone to the track, however, was enough loose.
After such a clear output it had not looked at the history of the Dakar Rally, which resulted in more than 9,000 kilometers through Argentina and Bolivia, long time. The newly developed and fast Peugeots to Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz from Spain and Dakar debutant Sebastien Loeb of France drove ahead and lay close together.
Peterhansel came through without any problems and benefited from an accident of the nine-time World Rally Champion Loeb on the eighth stage and Sainz ‘off due to technical difficulties in the tenth section. Only Al-Attiyah in the Mini of the German team X-raid was able to follow the high tempo of the French works team.
The rally was overshadowed by two accidents. A spectator was hit and already at the start of the Dakar debutant Guo Meiling was fired into a crowd and had three people injured, some seriously.
