La Paz (dpa) – The controversial Dakar Rally has called in Bolivia their first fatalities this year. On the seventh stage of the salt desert of Uyuni to Northern Argentina Salta a spectator has been detected from the car of the Frenchman Lionel Baud.
The 63-year-old man died of his injuries, several media reported, citing the rally organizers , The cause of the accident at kilometer 82 of the stage was initially unclear. At the start of the rally twelve people were injured in the Argentine city of Arrecife, as the Chinese woman Guo Meiling had lost control of their car.
The seventh stage had to be interrupted due to severe thunderstorms. While the cars continued their journey to the forced break, the section has been canceled in the bike. Peugeot driver Sebastien Loeb conquered after just one day the overall lead back. The French world champion took on the daypart second place behind his fellow Carlos Sainz from Spain. He repressed on the 336 km long section of Dakar record winner Stephane Peterhansel, who also drives a Peugeot, again from square one in the overall classification.
Loeb is now 1:58 minutes ago Peterhansel. Sainz in third place 5:08 minutes behind. For Peugeot it was the sixth stage win in a row after even the first part of the day had been canceled due to bad weather. Whether the weather conditions for the fatal accident were responsible, was initially unclear.
