Nico Rosberg has with his first win of the season stopped its earnings crisis and started the Mercedes-duel with world champion Lewis Hamilton to catch up. The German Silver Arrow driver left in Sunday’s fifth Formula 1 race this year the competition no chance and referred championship leader Hamilton with 17 seconds ahead of second place.

The Briton also prevented thanks to clever tire and pit stop strategy a German double victory and came ahead of Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel at the Spanish Grand Prix finish.

Small victory, great satisfaction: Nico Rosberg defeated for the first time in this Formula 1 season Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying. Nowhere is this more important than in Barcelona. Ferrari remains despite new parts at a distance.

In the World Cup standings with Rosberg took his ninth grand prix success seven points to Hamilton on – and he sent in good time before his home race in Monaco in two weeks, where he won in the past two years, the much-needed signal of the title race. However, Hamilton, who had not started for the first time this year, topped by lead, still well with 111 points. Rosberg comes to 91 meters. Vettel remains third with 80 points.

In the race Rosberg defended the first place in qualifying sovereign. Again with the old clutch in his Silver Arrow he laid out a start-to-measure. Unlike Hamilton: Perhaps the greatest opportunity to pass his German adversaries equal in the first turn of the 4.655 kilometer Circuit de Catalunya, he did not only lie: He had to still be overtaken by Vettel. In the second Ferrari Raikkonen made within a short time two places and joined a fifth.

Hamilton pushes Vettel to pass

Hamilton tried it first only timidly, the crew took him ahead of Vettel on lap 13 to pit. Optimal but did not go to the tire change, the left rear wheel, there were problems. This was not the plan on: because Vettel’s stop one lap later he was immaculate and so again before Hamilton back on the track. So it tried to Mercedes for the second tire change. Hamilton got the hard tires and gave powerful gas. At the top Rosberg turned lonely his rounds, in the 45th he was summoned for a tire change at the pit. But because Hamilton had caught up enormously in the meantime, Rosberg came behind his stall rivals back on the course.

The question of whether Hamilton could drive through possibly, faded away quickly. After re-tire change – his third – was Hamilton again well behind Rosberg – but ahead of Vettel. And so it went through the finish. Rosberg finished in as in the previous races back to space, from which it was started.
